Hiding in Honduras split horses in the final furlong and then out-dueled Tempus Volat to win the $200,000 Mathis Mile (G2) Dec. 28 at Santa Anita Park.
The dark bay 3-year-old is Dialed In’s fifth graded stakes winner this year and his 35th lifetime stakes winner. In 2025, Dialed In has accounted for graded winners in Australia, North America and South America. Dialed In will stand for $10,000 S&N in 2026.
Making just his third lifetime start on Sunday, Hiding in Honduras got a stalking trip along the rail, tracking just behind Tempus Volat, who got a half-mile in :47.63 and six furlongs in 1:12.31. After hesitating a bit in upper stretch, Hiding in Honduras made a daring move to challenge the pacesetter and got the best of him by a head at the wire.
“I tried to get him to break and follow the instructions like [trainer] Jonathan [Thomas] had told me,” said winning rider Antonio Fresu. “He settled nice and relaxed on the backside. When I got the split, he was still very green. He gave me the input to go and he kind of stood there a little bit then came back on. The horse is talented and he’s going to improve again.”
Hiding in Honduras has won two of his three starts, all coming since Oct. 2, and earned $147,600 for owner Robert LaPenta. The winner was bred in Kentucky by Patricia Moseley and is a half-brother to stakes winner Cameo Performance.
